“Computer is a programable machine”

Computer is an electronic machine, it transfers data into information.

designed to accept data, perform prescribed mathematical and logicaloperationsat high speed, and display the  results of these operations.

Input devices: –

Input devices mean the devices that enter the information into the computer.Input devices receive data from the user and convert it into a form that the computer can understand. Supermarkets, bank, etc. use various input devices to collect large amounts of data rapidly. Such devices include barcode readers, magnetic in character readers, optical reader and card readers.

There are different types of input devices, like:

  • Keyboard
  • Mouse
  • Touchpad
  • Remote control
  • Scanner
  • Barcode reader
  • Magnetic Ink Character Reader
  • Optical Character Reader
  • Keyboard

Key board was invented by Christopher Sholes in 1868. Keyboard is used to enter text in to a computer. There is not a single set of rules dictating the number of keys on keyboard. Most brands use the keyboard with 104 keys but the original keyboard has 84 keys.

  • Mouse

Mouse was invented in 1963 by Douglas Engelbart.Mouse is used to control the position of the pointer on screen and to select. The first application widely used of the mouse was with the Apple Lisa Computer.

  • Touchpad

Touchpad is also used to control the pointers on screen and the function of touch is very easy. First touchpad developed by Psion’s MC 200/400/600/WORD series in 1989.

  • Remote control

It is used to control other devices, like Television, Personal computers and home entertainment system.

  • Scanner

It is used for transferred the image of hard copies or test to the computer. It was built in 1957 by a team led by Russell A. Kirsch at US National Bureau of standards.

  • Barcode Reader

The code for each product is unique combination of vertical bars that represents product information such as the price. The cashier used a barcode reader to scan the barcode on each item. The computer uses the barcode to identify the product.

  • Magnetic Ink Character Reader

Magnetic ink is special ink that contains magnetic particles of iron oxide. A magnetic ink character reader can scan characters printed in magnetic ink. This technique is called Magnetic Ink Character Reader Recognition (MICR). MICR is used to extensively in bank because magnetic ink characters are difficult to forge. This makes them ideal for marking and identifying cheques. Cheques usually have the cheque number, bank code and branch code printed in magnetic ink. This information is scanned by magnetic ink character readers and the cheques are sorted city-wise or branch-wise.

  • Optical Character Reader

An optical character reader is a device used to input normal printed or handwritten text. It first produces a digital image of the text. Then character recognition software is used to convert this image into character codes that can be understood, stored and processed by a computer. This technique is called Optical Character Reader.

Output Devices: –

Output is the data that come out from the computer after some people put some input in it.

There are many different types of output devices.

  • Laser printer
  • CRT monitor
  • TFT Monitor
  • Speakers
  • Inkjet Printer
  • Multimedia Projector (LCD Projector)

  • Laser Printer

It is a computer printer that uses a laser beam shining on a photoconductive drum to produce characters, which are transferred to paper. First laser printer was developed in 1960.

  • Cathode Ray Tube Monitor (CRT Monitor)

The cathode ray tube is a vacuum tube that contains more than one electron guns and a phosphorescent screen is used to show the display.

  • TFT Monitor

TFT stand for Thin Film Transistor.TFT monitor is not different from liquid-crystal-display (LCD). TFT has a very well improved image quality. It is very thing and light. We always use it at home and office. It replaces CRT monitor to become the most popular monitor.

  • Speaker

Speaker is used to give out the music, speech and sound. We used it in radio, television, music centers and computers.

  • Inkjet Printer

Inkjet printerUsed in home often for printing high quality text, graphics and photos. Inkjet printer also used to print digital photography.

  • Multimedia Projector (LCD Projector)

Multimedia projector used to display the output from a computer on a large screen. It is commonly used for displaying presentations during meetings and conferences
